Ten Alternative Time Displays From Geneva Watch Days 2026

The circular nature of time displays is more than just a recurrence. It’s a connecting link between the primitive means of time-telling via sundials and the evolved realization of hours, minutes, and seconds via gears in circular motion.

So, in most cases, despite the infinite possible ways to depict time, it’s evident that almost every watch created relies on the basic circular time display via hands. Well, not every watch, but almost.

The tradition of alternate time displays is however primitive with the earliest mainstream realization being the jumping hour created in 1883 by Austrian engineer Josef Pallweber. This digital time display of some sorts had once been a niche entity with its yield occupying the fringes of mainstream catalogs. However, just in the last two years, jump hour watches have been a very popular theme across novelties and even revivals occupying the haute horlogerie as well as accessible spectrums and everything in between.

Together with retrograde displays, wandering hours, and regulator dials, alternate time displays have appeared with increasing frequency and more importantly as sustainable collections.

While still somewhat niche and definitely subjective style-wise, the strange fascination with alternative time displays continues at Geneva Watch Days 2026 where a few many realizations of the time-telling aside emerged. Let’s highlight a few of our favorites.

L. Leroy Vox Temporis

The L. Leroy Vox Temporis reimagines how time is told by replacing the conventional minute hand with an auditory complication: a minute repeater that chimes the hours, quarters, and minutes on demand. As its face occurs a dial with a flinqué soleil pattern that turns continuously with a fixed hand-engraved arrow-shaped hour hand, so only the hours are read visually. With no minute track to consult, the wearer who needs precision must activate the repeater slide at 9 o’clock and listen as two polished hammers strike gongs to announce the exact time, turning the act of reading the watch into a ritual of sound and interaction.

Bremont Terra Nova Jumping Hour

The Bremont Terra Nova Jumping Hour eschews conventional hands for a refined montre à guichet - a “watch with windows,” in which time is read through apertures rather than indicated by rotating pointers. In the models, two vertically aligned apertures dominate the dial in two configurations: the hour window at 12 o’clock and the minute window at 6 o’clock, each protected by its own sapphire crystal or with a repositioning of the apertures offset at 9 o’clock with a central seconds hand. Both iterations retain the same principle: hours jump while minutes advance via a printed or disc-based scale seen through a narrow guichet.

Genus “Les Flux du Temps”

Genus’s “Les Flux du Temps” does not tell time with hands - it makes it travel. At its center, a large, free-moving C-shaped element in hand-decorated 18K gold glides around the display’s periphery, indicating the passing hour and each 15-minute increment. Minutes arrive through an even more unconventional choreography: 11 articulated 18K-gold elements move between two counter-rotating wheels in a shape of 8, marking the passing tens of minutes before resolving the precise minute on the track. This is the GNS2’s defining idea carried to an expressive extreme: time is read through movement rather than imposed by fixed pointers. The result is less a dial than a kinetic landscape: a horological system in which the hours and minutes do not merely appear, but flow as the time is set in perpetual motion.

Urwerk UR-150 Golden Scorpion

The Urwerk UR-150 Golden Scorpion tells time not with conventional hands, but with a kinetic satellite display that merges orbital geometry and haute horlogerie drama. Three hour satellites rotate on a central flying carousel, each bearing an hour numeral - the active hour is framed by a large, open-worked retrograde minute hand that sweeps across an expansive 240° arc - double the span found on many earlier Urwerk pieces. As the minute hand reaches “60,” a bespoke Urwerk spring triggers a lightning-fast reset: in one-hundredth of a second the hand snaps back to zero while the satellites simultaneously pivot 270° to present the next hour, a choreographed “attack” that gives the Scorpion its name. This performance is orchestrated by a cam-and-rack system - replacing Urwerk’s traditional Maltese-cross mechanism, and governed by a flywheel speed regulator inspired by minute-repeater technology, ensuring precision amid spectacle.

Amida Digitrend OSII Black

The Amida Digitrend OSII Black tells time through a patented Light Reflecting Display (LRD) that transforms a horizontal mechanical arrangement into a vertical, legible readout - essentially a prism-based optical trick engineered for the driver’s glance. Hours jump and minutes scroll on coaxial discs mounted within the case, but instead of facing the wearer directly, they are oriented horizontally and viewed through a precisely cut sapphire prism at the front of the watch. For the OSII Black, Amida has made this system fully luminous for the first time. BGW9 Super-LumiNova coats the hour and minute numerals, as well as select internal elements, and the single-block sapphire “hood” is reworked to maximize light ingress, charging the display efficiently even in low-light conditions.

Trilobe Chateau Trente-Deux

The Trilobe Château Trente-Deux tells time without hands, using three coaxial rotating rings that glide beneath fixed indices to indicate hours, minutes, and seconds in a single, fluid plane. Hours are read on a peripheral chapter ring that rotates counterclockwise, while minutes and seconds occupy an off-center figure-eight aperture to the left, each on its own finely finished disc. This “hand-free” architecture is driven by Trilobe’s in-house X-Nihilo automatic caliber, whose gear trains translate conventional motion into the choreographed rotation of these rings, delivering legibility through alignment rather than pointers. The result is a time display that feels both mechanically rigorous and quietly theatrical - time not pointed at, but revealed in motion.

Konstantin Chaykin “Wolf”

Konstantin Chaykin’s Wolf Wristmon reimagines time telling as living theatre: hours and minutes animate the creature’s expression via signature Joker-indication, with disc displays at 10 and 2 o’clock continuously reshaping the face. Yet the true innovation lies in its lunar narrative - abandoning the conventional 59-tooth moonphase wheel, Wolf tracks only the full-moon period, revealing a luminous disk in its fanged jaws 24 hours before, during, and after the apex, then vanishing discreetly for the remainder of the cycle. This poetic compression of celestial rhythm into a three-day window transforms time from linear progression into episodic drama.

Gagà Laboratorio Labormatic Superleggero

The Gagà Laboratorio Labormatic Superleggero rejects convention with a time-telling architecture that feels both industrial and theatrical. Instead of traditional hands, hours scroll digitally through a noon aperture framed by four laser-etched sapphire “portholes,” revealing a disc with bright yellow numerals against a dotted black-and-white field. Minutes are read conventionally via a rotating yellow hand sweeping a grey-blue dial, while running seconds spin on a matte grey central cap - a kinetic indicator rather than a hand. This timepiece transforms time into a layered, mechanical spectacle that rewards close inspection.

De Bethune DB25 Digitale

The De Bethune DB25 Digitale replaces conventional hands with a poetic, mechanically sophisticated digital display: a jumping hour aperture at 12 o’clock paired with an analogue minute indicator on a rotating disc at 6 o’clock. This handless architecture liberates the dial, allowing the eye to drift unimpeded across De Bethune’s signature heat-blued titanium canvas - random hand-guilloché at its center, a silvered barleycorn minute track, and a celestial “Starry Varius” sky of polished titanium set with grey-gold pin stars.

M.A.D.Editions M.A.D.3 Vincent Calabrese

The M.A.D.Editions M.A.D.3 Vincent Calabrese tells time through a wandering jumping-hour complication that transforms the passage of an hour into a visible, progressive journey rather than an abrupt digital leap. At the dial’s periphery lies a luminous sapphire minute track, while a sunray-brushed, domed disc rotates within, bearing a circular aperture that reveals the current hour numeral and an arrow pointer that sweeps the minutes. As the hour advances, the disc carries the hour slowly across the dial, in the final minutes, the numeral gracefully rotates away, unveiling the next hour at 60 minutes - a fluid transition that honors Vincent Calabrese’s original Baladin concept. Above this choreography, a broad-arrow central seconds hand adds a conventional yet elegant counterpoint to the unconventional display.
