Atelier Wen x Massena LAB Inflection 烁 (Shuò): Where Tantalum Meets The Art Of The Engraver

Atelier Wen and Massena LAB have taken the idea of artisanal watchmaking to an ambitious new level with Inflection 烁 (Shuò), a collaboration built around an extraordinary combination of material, craftsmanship and cultural symbolism. At its heart is a dial made from solid 18k gold, brought to life through two of the most demanding decorative techniques in watchmaking: hand-executed tremblage and hand engraving. A dial made to push craftsmanship to its limits

The dial is undoubtedly the centrepiece of Inflection 烁 (Shuò). Crafted from solid 18k gold, it weighs 14.59g in the Rose Gold version and 14.66g in the White Gold version. The choice of gold is deliberate: its relative softness allows the artisans to execute the delicate tremblage and engraving with a level of texture and definition that would be difficult to achieve in harder metals.

The base plate is finished entirely by hand using tremblage, one of the rarest and most demanding decorative crafts in watchmaking. Working with a hand-held graver, the artisan continuously oscillates the tool across the gold, creating thousands of tiny, irregular facets. Each square millimetre is individually worked, with a single dial often requiring several days of painstaking work.

There is no room for error. A misplaced movement of the graver cannot simply be corrected, potentially forcing the artisan to begin again. The reward is a surface with an organic, shimmering texture that breaks up the light differently with every movement of the wrist. For this collaboration, the tremblage is executed entirely by hand by engraving specialist Coralie Mercier on behalf of GT Cadrans.

A California dial with a distinctly Chinese identity

The dial takes the familiar California-style numeral layout and gives it a distinctly cross-cultural interpretation. Instead of using only Arabic and Roman numerals, Inflection 烁 (Shuò) pairs Arabic numerals with Chinese numerals, creating a visual dialogue between two traditions.

The numerals themselves are entirely bespoke. William Massena designed the Arabic numerals specifically for the collaboration, while the Chinese characters were specially calligraphed by a Hong Kong calligrapher. Every numeral is then engraved by hand, ensuring that each marker carries subtle variations that distinguish it from machine-produced decoration. It is a fitting expression of the collaboration between Atelier Wen and Massena LAB: two perspectives, two cultural references and two design philosophies brought together on one dial.

Tantalum: the foundation

The dial may command attention, but it sits within a case that is remarkable in its own right. Inflection 烁 (Shuò) builds on Atelier Wen's Inflection collection, described as the world's first permanent collection of integrated-bracelet watches crafted entirely from 99.9% pure tantalum.

Tantalum is prized for its enigmatic blue-grey colour and exceptional resistance to corrosion, but it is notoriously difficult to machine. That difficulty is part of the appeal. Across the case and integrated bracelet, Atelier Wen combines strong vertical brushing, sandblasted accents and mirror-polished chamfers to create a complex play of surfaces and reflections.

The 40mm case measures 45mm from lug to lug and 10.2mm thick, including the crystal. Its architecture moves away from conventional flat surfaces, instead using a combination of concave and convex forms. These flowing surfaces allow the natural sheen of tantalum to shift constantly as the watch moves on the wrist. The watch is water resistant to 100 metres, or 10 ATM. The screw-down crown is executed in tantalum on the White Gold variant, while the Rose Gold version receives a solid rose-gold crown.

A movement worthy of the dial

Behind the dial lies another major element of the collaboration: a customised GP03300 calibre from Girard-Perregaux, one of Switzerland's oldest haute horlogerie manufactures. Its technical expertise and high-end finishing capabilities made it the chosen foundation for Atelier Wen's first exploration into this level of movement decoration.

The movement bridges feature sweeping, curved lines inspired by representations of wind in historical Chinese paintings. The concept was developed by Atelier Wen designer Alfred Chan together with Sidoine Lescauville and the Girard-Perregaux technical team. The flowing forms provide a deliberate visual counterpoint to the considerable density and weight of the tantalum case.

The bridges are ruthenium-plated and finished with dramatic anglage, sharp exterior angles and laser-etched waved côtes radiating from the centre of the movement. Black-polished screws add another layer of detail, while the rotor follows the same wind-inspired language and is plated in 5N rose gold.

A collaboration built on contrast

What makes Inflection 烁 (Shuò) particularly compelling is the way its elements play against one another. The cool, blue-grey character and weight of tantalum meet the warmth of solid 18k gold. Traditional hand engraving and tremblage sit alongside a contemporary integrated-bracelet architecture, while motifs inspired by Chinese art inform the decoration of a Swiss mechanical movement.

Rather than treating craftsmanship as an embellishment, Atelier Wen and Massena LAB have made it the central idea of the watch. Every component, from the sculpted case and meticulously finished bracelet to the hand-worked dial and decorated movement, contributes to the same philosophy: pushing the material and the artisans working with it as far as possible.

Five-year warranty

Inflection 烁 (Shuò) comes with a five-year warranty from the date of delivery.
