There is something extraordinary about wearing a fragment of the universe on your wrist. Meteorites are older than civilisation, the Moon has guided humanity for millennia, and the stars were used to measure time long before mechanical clocks existed. For Les Ateliers Louis Moinet, however, this fascination is not simply an aesthetic exercise. Astronomy is woven into the Maison’s history. Louis Moinet himself studied the heavens through his telescope and, in 1816, created the Compteur de tierces to measure the movement of celestial bodies an invention now recognised as the first chronograph in history. More than two centuries later, that celestial connection continues with two extraordinary creations: STELLARIUM and MOON METEOR laucnhed at Geneva Watch Days 2026. One looks towards the planets and the vastness of space; the other brings the Moon, meteors and an astronaut onto the wrist. Both combine genuine meteorites, miniature artistry and sophisticated mechanics to explore humanity’s enduring fascination with the cosmos.

STELLARIUM: A Universe on the Wrist

Created 210 years after Louis Moinet’s historic Compteur de tierces, STELLARIUM translates a celestial map into haute horlogerie. Its dial presents a star-filled sky that changes dramatically with the light, while the reverse reveals a miniature planetary display.

At its heart is a fragment of Muonionalusta meteorite, tinted a deep midnight blue. Formed almost 4.5 billion years ago, around the birth of the solar system, it is known for its distinctive Widmanstätten patterns, created by an extraordinarily slow cooling process. Here, the extraterrestrial material becomes the backdrop to the celestial display, creating a physical connection between the cosmos and the mechanism within.

By day, longitude and latitude lines create the appearance of an astronomical chart. At night, the stars glow blue and appear to disappear into the depths of the dial. Layered meteorite and sapphire elements enhance this illusion of space, while the tourbillon cage appears against the cosmic backdrop.

A Date Written in the Stars

The reverse of STELLARIUM reveals tiny, hand-painted planets, some measuring just two millimetres across. Their arrangement is particularly meaningful: they reproduce the exact configuration of the solar system on 21 March 2013, the day Jean-Marie Schaller unveiled Louis Moinet’s original Compteur de tierces at the Neuchâtel Observatory, confirming its historic place as the first chronograph.

Collectors can also request another date of personal significance, allowing the planets to be positioned according to a birthday, anniversary or another important moment. It is a poetic form of personalisation, turning the heavens themselves into a permanent marker of time.

The celestial drama continues with a flying tourbillon whose off-centre cage appears to hover within the movement. Hand-wound Calibre LM180 uses two serial spring barrels arranged head-to-tail through the Maison’s “volte-face” system, delivering a 96-hour power reserve. The 42.50mm case combines 18K 5N red gold with an inner Grade 5 titanium core treated in blue DLC, while openworked sides reveal the movement. STELLARIUM is limited to just 12 pieces.

MOON METEOR: When Night Falls, the Watch Comes Alive

If STELLARIUM looks outward towards the planetary universe, MOON METEOR brings the cosmos closer. Its dial depicts a vivid nebula scattered with meteors, with a Moon at its centre and a tiny astronaut. The real magic, however, appears after dark.

The dial is created using painstaking miniature painting techniques. Working beneath a binocular microscope, the artist uses a brush with only a few hairs to build the nebula through successive layers of colour, lacquer and varnish. Luminescent pigments are then applied with extraordinary precision, with every stage assessed in both daylight and darkness.

The meteors are not painted representations. Three are genuine fragments: the Martian NWA 13925, Jbilet Winselwan, which contains amino acids associated with the chemistry of life, and the exceptionally rare Sahara 97093 enstatite meteorite, known to contain microdiamonds of interstellar origin. The flange is once again made from Muonionalusta meteorite, linking the two watches.

The Moon, Built From the Moon

At the centre of MOON METEOR sits a domed, hand-engraved and hand-painted lunar disc. Its craters and reliefs are treated with luminescent material, allowing the Moon to emerge dramatically at night. Two lunar meteorites represent the full and new moon: Gadamis 005, with its distinctive grey-and-white texture, and intensely black Dhofar 457. A hand-painted astronaut sits above the disc, marking its changing phases.

Behind the artistry lies remarkable engineering. A 135-tooth gear wheel drives the astronomical moon display, which deviates by just one day every 122 years. Self-winding Calibre LM113 was developed by Louis Moinet with its longstanding partner Concepto and offers 48 hours of power reserve.

The Grade 5 titanium case measures 40.70mm and weighs just 18 grams. Its openworked lugs and domed sapphire crystal reinforce the contemporary architecture, while the celestial landscape remains the undisputed star. MOON METEOR is limited to 12 pieces.

When Time Meets the Cosmos

What makes STELLARIUM and MOON METEOR compelling is that Louis Moinet does not use astronomy merely as decoration. It is part of the Maison’s DNA. Louis Moinet once looked towards the stars while developing his groundbreaking chronograph; today, his namesake Maison looks back at those same heavens through meteorites that predate humanity, lunar fragments, miniature planets and mechanisms capable of tracking astronomical cycles.

One watch takes us outward, towards the planetary system and the immensity of space. The other brings the Moon into an intimate miniature landscape. Together, they demonstrate what happens when independent watchmaking refuses to stay within conventional boundaries: time becomes not just something we measure, but something we can contemplate, explore and, quite literally, hold in our hands.
