Limited to just 100 pieces, the new Ressence TYPE 10 DN (Dark Night) asks an unusual question: What would a mechanical watch look like if it evolved according to natural laws rather than technical ones? The story of the TYPE 10 began modestly in 2022, with a handful of Post-it notes stuck to founder Benoît Mintiens's computer screen. Every few months, another layer of ideas was added. Each new sketch built on the last, slowly forming what Mintiens describes as a lasagna of concepts. What started as separate, distinct watch components gradually fused into one unified, organic whole.

The First Oil Filled Watch

Four years later, that process gave birth to the TYPE 10 : Ressence’s first oil-filled watch powered by an in-house movement and shaped as much by reflection and time as by design. The Ressence TYPE 10 splits its case into two hermetically sealed chambers, one air-filled and one oil-filled. The RW-04 movement drives a micro-magnet disc on the air side, and a matching disc in the oil mirrors it through magnetic attraction. The magnets sit 0.2 mm apart, separated by a 0.1 mm titanium membrane, so there is no shaft, no opening, and no leak. An expansion chamber absorbs the oil’s volume changes with temperature, preventing gas bubbles as it cools, and every watch is tested for an hour at 60°C and an hour at -5°C, extremes that can’t be reached on the wrist. The dial shows hours and minutes, a second time zone for a wearer on the move, a 120-second runner that also acts as a shock absorber to keep the magnetic coupling in step, and a colour-coded oil temperature indicator in the hour disc, where green marks the normal operating range.

A Notion At Work

Dematerialisation, a notion that Ressence holds close, works thus: take away the physicality of the components to obtain a seamless volume. The boundaries between components visually dissolve. Worn on the wrist, the TYPE 10 DN presents itself as a monochromatic monolith, undivided and unbroken. Case, dial and integrated rubber strap alike are steeped in a single deep blue colour, Dark Night. The polished Grade 5 titanium case carries a hard coating; the sapphire, meanwhile, melts into the shape of the case, a feat owed to the oil-filled dial, for oil draws the dial visually upward toward the crystal's upper surface. Ressence's rotating discs (ROCS) replace the conventional hand entirely, and the oil presses the illusion further, erasing the separations between discs until hours, minutes, a second time zone and runner spread across one continuous graphical surface. Shape, finish, colour and clarity converge here in a rare unity: the high-definition treatment of every detail and finish yields a feel that is unmistakably futuristic.

The Architecture Beneath

Beneath the futuristic design, lies a subterranean architecture of staggering elaboration. Consider TYPE 10 DN: 538 components in all, 196 of them crowded within the oil-charged ROCS 10 module. Forty-nine gears. Forty-seven jewels. Eight ball bearings. Every last one of these elements conspires toward a single, almost paradoxical end: seamlessness. At the core sits Ressence's own RW-04 self-winding calibre, a movement configured expressly for TYPE 10. Its 252 components draw a 60-hour power reserve from twin barrels. The minute track, though, is where the watchmaker's obsessiveness truly bristles. Its 24 titanium segments alternate between small, sandblasted inserts filled with luminous paint and larger, linearly brushed surfaces. The direction of the brushing shifts by 30 degrees from one segment to the next, so each catches the light differently. As the wrist moves, light travels around the minute track in subtle facets, bringing an otherwise continuous surface to life.

TYPE 10 began with an inquiry about evolution and now it concludes with a specific future vision. TYPE 10 has a very futuristic shape thanks to its smooth finishing and flowing lines. Only the three-dimensional Ressence ROCS 10 display, where time itself becomes a component of the architecture, can create such a unique design. Different components come together to form a cohesive whole. Mechanical components appear to dissolve. While the complexity remains inside. Simplicity is what is experienced.

How many pieces will be made, and what makes this model special?

The TYPE 10 DN (Dark Night) is limited to 100 pieces. It is Ressence’s first oil-filled watch powered by an in-house movement, designed to look like a single unified form rather than an assembly of parts.

What does “Dark Night” refer to?

It is the deep blue colour used across the case, dial and integrated rubber strap, so the watch reads as one seamless, monochromatic piece, like a single cut stone.

How complex is the watch inside?

It has 538 components in total, including 196 in the oil-filled ROCS 10 module, plus 49 gears, 47 jewels and 8 ball bearings. It is powered by the self-winding RW-04 calibre, which has 252 components and a 60-hour power reserve from twin barrels.
