Rolex Perpetual Padellone: Specs, Price & Our Honest Take

The date, the day, the month, the phases of the moon. We experience these rhythms every day, but rarely do we see them brought together on a single dial with such mechanical precision. With the new Perpetual Padellone, Rolex turns the calendar into something almost poetic, while quietly packing it with some of the most sophisticated technical developments in its modern watchmaking. The name alone is enough to make collectors look twice. Padellone is the nickname given to Rolex reference 8171, the historic complete calendar watch that has long occupied a special place in the brand's story. Its modern successor does not attempt to recreate that watch. Instead, it takes the spirit of the original and reinterprets it through a new generation of Rolex engineering.

At 39mm, the new Padellone is elegant rather than imposing. Its dial tracks the date with a blue hand tipped by a crescent moon, displays the day and month through apertures at 12 o'clock and places a blue enamelled moonphase at six. But beneath this deceptively serene exterior is calibre 7190, a movement protected by 30 patent applications and equipped with an entirely new annual calendar mechanism called Haplos. The result is a watch where tradition and technology are not competing ideas. They are working in perfect alignment.

A Calendar With A View Of The Night Sky

The dial is where the Padellone's traditional character and contemporary execution meet most beautifully. Most of its surface has a grained finish, contrasted by a fine satin finish around the outer edge. A blue central hand, tipped with a crescent moon, travels around the perimeter to indicate the date against a black printed scale. At 12 o'clock, two apertures display the day and month in English.

At six o'clock sits perhaps the most poetic element of the watch, a blue enamelled moonphase disc. Completing one rotation every 29.53 days, it follows the actual lunar month. The full moon and new moon are rendered in meteorite, with the new moon treated in dark blue PVD, while silver stars are pad printed across the disc. It is an unusually expressive detail for Rolex. The moonphase is not simply another complication on the dial. It creates a visual connection between the watch, the passage of time and the night sky.

A 39mm Case With An Elegant Profile

The Padellone measures 39mm in diameter and is housed in a case with deliberately graceful proportions. Its bezel combines two distinct treatments, with elegant fluting on the lower section and a subtly domed upper section. The sapphire crystal is domed and, like the transparent caseback, receives anti reflective coating. Through the back, the movement becomes part of the visual experience, revealing decorated bridges with Rolex Côtes de Genève and a cut out yellow gold oscillating weight. The case is available in 18 ct Everose gold or 950 platinum and is water resistant to 50 metres.

Rolex offers the Everose gold version with either a Settimo bracelet or a matt brown alligator leather strap. The platinum version comes on a matt black alligator leather strap.  The Settimo bracelet is particularly intricate. Made from seven small, slightly contoured polished elements per link, it is designed to follow the shape of the wrist while remaining lightweight. Its concealed Crownclasp preserves the uninterrupted appearance of the bracelet. The leather straps feature green calfskin linings and tone on tone stitching and are fitted with a Dualclasp designed to sit centrally on the wrist.

The Real Story Is Inside

At the heart of the Padellone is calibre 7190, a self winding mechanical movement developed and manufactured entirely by Rolex and exclusive to this watch. Protected by 30 patent applications, two of them exclusive to the Padellone, the movement represents a significant piece of technical development for Rolex. It operates at a frequency of 5 hertz and is notably thinner than the majority of Rolex movements, sharing this characteristic with the other calibres in the 71XX family. The architecture is based on calibre 7135, introduced with the Land Dweller in 2025, and incorporates the same Dynapulse escapement and advanced oscillator. The real technical breakthrough, however, is the annual calendar system.

Meet Haplos

Rolex has developed an entirely new system called Haplos for the Padellone. Its job is to distinguish between months containing 30 days and those containing 31 days, eliminating the need for the wearer to manually correct the date at the end of those shorter months. The system is remarkably compact, relying on just two components connected to the date mechanism: an additional carrier finger and an annual lever. Even more ingeniously, the programming required for the annual calendar is incorporated into the reverse side of the month disc. This communicates the current month to the annual lever, allowing the mechanism to determine how the calendar should advance.

And then comes the moment that makes the complication particularly satisfying. At midnight, the date, day and month all change instantaneously. For Rolex, this is an important demonstration of its ability to take a familiar complication and rethink the mechanism underneath it.

Dynapulse And Syloxi

Calibre 7190 also incorporates Rolex's Dynapulse escapement, a sequential energy distribution system made from silicon and designed to combine energy efficiency with reliability and resistance to strong magnetic fields. The escapement, first introduced in calibre 7135, is the subject of seven patent applications. The movement's Syloxi hairspring is also made from silicon, giving it resistance to magnetic fields as well as strong thermal stability and shock resistance. Its patented geometry helps maintain regularity in different positions.

For calibre 7190, Rolex has made the Syloxi coils particularly thick to increase rigidity and provide the power required for the movement's 5 hertz frequency. The oscillator itself uses a patented ceramic balance staff and an optimised brass balance wheel, both designed to withstand strong magnetic fields. Paraflex shock absorbers further improve resistance to shocks and help the balance staff return to its optimal position. Despite all this technical complexity, the movement retains a relatively practical power reserve of approximately 66 hours, thanks to its barrel architecture and efficient escapement.

Rolex's Highest Standard Of Certification

As with every Rolex watch, the Perpetual Padellone carries Superlative Chronometer certification. Since 2026, the certification has been strengthened with three additional criteria covering resistance to magnetism, reliability and sustainability. These complement the existing requirements covering precision, waterproofness, self winding and autonomy. The precision standard remains particularly demanding. Once the movement has been cased, the completed watch must achieve an accuracy of between minus two and plus two seconds per day. The certification is represented by the familiar green seal accompanying every Rolex watch and comes with an international five year guarantee.

Where Tradition Meets Technology

The Perpetual Padellone is perhaps most interesting because it refuses to choose between old fashioned watchmaking romance and modern mechanical engineering. There is the moonphase, the meteorite moons, the fluted bezel and the reference to one of Rolex's most collectible historic calendar watches. But there is also Haplos, Dynapulse, Syloxi, a 5 hertz frequency and a movement protected by 30 patent applications. It is a watch about calendars, but also about cycles. The date advances, the month changes, the moon completes its journey and the mechanism quietly keeps track of it all. That is the poetry of the Padellone. Rolex has taken something as familiar as a calendar and turned it into an intricate meditation on how we measure time.

My Honest Take

What stands out to us isn't just that Rolex built a genuinely clever annual calendar, it's that they chose to debut it on a dress watch rather than a sports model, at a moment when sports watches are still what move the secondary market in India. That's a deliberate bet on watchmaking substance over hype, and it's the kind of move that rewards patient collectors more than flippers. The Haplos system and the Dynapulse-based calibre 7190 are real engineering wins, not marketing dressing. For the Indian collector market specifically, the bigger question isn't whether the Padellone is well made, it clearly is, but whether a 39mm classical dress watch, however technically brilliant, can compete for wrist time and demand against Rolex's own sports catalogue here. That tension, more than the watch itself, is the real story worth watching.
