The Hour Markers recently hosted Tissot CEO Sylvain Dolla for his very first visit to India, where he engaged closely with the local Tissot team, retail partners, and passionate watch collectors. Sitting down for a candid conversation during his trip, Dolla shared his insights on the brand's incredible trajectory, the philosophy behind modern horological icons, and why India has rapidly emerged as one of the most exciting markets in the watchmaking world.

From Consumer Electronics To The T-Touch Legacy

The interview began with Sylvain Dolla reflecting on his personal horological journey, where he shared how his entry into the industry was preceded by a career in consumer electronics. When Tissot embarked on developing the very initial T-Touch years ago, Dolla was directly involved in the project. Long before touchscreens became ubiquitous on every device, launching the world's first tactile watch featuring a touch-sensitive sapphire crystal to control altimeters, barometers, and compasses sent shockwaves across the consumer tech landscape. That groundbreaking crossover between digital utility and traditional watchmaking proved to Dolla early on that pushing technical boundaries is not a departure from watchmaking, but a core continuation of the brand's DNA, reinforcing Tissot's belief that "Innovation has always been part of our tradition".

The PRX Phenomenon And Honouring Heritage

The conversation naturally turned to the massive global and domestic success of the PRX, which currently accounts for roughly 20% of the brand's total sales. Dolla recounted discovering an original 1970s model during a weekly product meeting and using tomography to ensure 1-to-1 precision with the 1977 archetype. Speaking on the universal appeal of the line, Dolla noted that "It pays tribute to our rich history, but at the same time, it's modern and it talks to the heart of the young generation."

Redefining Value Beyond "Accessible Luxury"

Rather than allowing Tissot to be pigeonholed into the conventional category of "accessible luxury," Dolla asserted that the brand occupies a much deeper, more distinct tier in the horological landscape. Moving past standard market labels, he emphasized that Tissot’s true identity is anchored in the rich heritage, meticulous craftsmanship, and enduring emotional connection of Swiss watchmaking. Highlighting the expanding profile of today's market, Dolla observed that this ethos resonates so strongly that even seasoned collectors with multi-million-dollar portfolios regularly choose a Tissot for their daily wear. "We aren't defined by traditional luxury; rather, Tissot stands for the rich history, innovation, tradition, and genuine emotion embedded in Swiss watchmaking heritage.” Sylvian said.

A Long-Term Vision For India’s Rapid Ascent

With over 400 points of sale established across the country, Tissot’s explosive growth trajectory in India represents a monumental milestone in the brand's global history. Tracing the roots of this success, Dolla credited the Swatch Group's foundational foresight 24 years ago: making the strategic decision to invest early by establishing a dedicated local subsidiary and recruiting an on-the-ground team rather than relying on remote third-party shipping. That deep, long-term commitment to understanding the nuances of the domestic market has paid off dramatically. Having surged past traditional strongholds like South Korea and even its home market of Switzerland to become Tissot's third-largest market worldwide, Dolla emphasized that the brand's approach remains rooted in sustainable expansion. Dolla stated that "We are not there just for a quick win, we are here for the long term, investing in our team, our marketing, and helping our retail partners expand into tier-two cities and beyond."

Navigating Omnichannel Realities And Smart Tech

Discussing the retail landscape, Dolla addressed the balance between digital expansion and physical touchpoints. While Tissot was a pioneer in e-commerce, digital channels remain complementary rather than a replacement for retail. Because a watch is an emotional product, online platforms serve to understand consumer journeys rather than displace physical boutiques. Addressing early skepticism surrounding smartwatches and tech disruptors, Dolla pointed to concrete global data that "Smartwatches haven't killed traditional watchmaking; they act as an ancillary entry point, and in markets like the US, sales have actually multiplied since connected watches emerged because people buy a Tissot as a fine watch designed to last for years."

Balancing A Diverse Portfolio And Guarding Against AI

Managing a remarkably wide catalog ranging from pocket watches and gold pieces to sports models and solar tech requires careful strategic focus. Dolla explained that marketing efforts are deliberately concentrated on the under-30 demographic, who represent the most active segment of Swiss watch buyers globally. When asked about modern tech integration, Dolla drew a firm line on artificial intelligence and commented "We will never use AI in anything that touches emotion because a fine watch is an emotional product; we want real designers looking forward, real models, and real people because we sell real emotions."

Tissot’s extraordinary ascent is the result of two decades of deep-rooted local commitment and a clear-eyed vision for the future

As Sylvain Dolla’s landmark visit to India demonstrated, Tissot’s extraordinary ascent is no accident of timing, but the result of two decades of deep-rooted local commitment and a clear-eyed vision for the future. By balancing a diverse, heritage-rich portfolio, from the global phenomenon of the PRX to technical divers and touch technologies, with an unwavering focus on real human emotion rather than digital shortcuts, Tissot continues to capture the heart of a rapidly evolving nation. With India now standing proudly as the brand's third-largest global market, Dolla and his team have proven that when a storied Swiss house pairs authentic craftsmanship with long-term strategy, the results speak for themselves.
