As we stepped back into a shared history where our fathers worked side by side to help shape the Indian watch landscape, catching up with AP Group Managing Director & CEO Hamza Patel felt like more than just an interview, it was a continuation of a legacy. Sitting down across from a man who now represents the third generation of a family business spanning four decades, it became immediately clear that Hamza is not merely maintaining his father Aftab Patel's pioneering footprints, but actively evolving them for a dynamic new era. From steering a massive independent retail network to navigating the shifting tides of Indian luxury, Patel offered a look into what it takes to honour the past while boldly commanding the ship forward. Legacy, Leadership, And The Art Of Simplification

Opening with a discussion that reflected deep-rooted family ties, our conversation quickly bridged personal history with business strategy as Hamza reflected on the legacy built by his father, Aftab Patel, who revolutionized the Indian watch landscape by introducing fine Swiss horology. Hamza displays a rare blend of respect for tradition and modern reinvention, noting that his father’s inspiring, lead-by-example approach taught him that true distinction comes from working smart rather than merely working hard. This guiding philosophy has steered the AP Group through significant strategic shifts, most notably a bold move away from legacy multi-brand retail environments like Watches of Switzerland to focus entirely on exclusive brand outlets (EBOs) and mono-brand retail. Today, managing over 65 boutiques and 400 employees independently with zero debt, the group stands as a testament to the power of calculated risk-taking and self-funded growth. Reflecting on those core lessons from his father, Hamza shared: "The one thing he always told me, was that everything is driven by common sense and logic. So if there's something that you don't understand, just step back and simplify it."

The Tissot Phenomenon And Market Dominance

The conversation naturally gravitated toward the phenomenal trajectory of brands like Tissot, which has achieved extraordinary growth and market dominance in the Rs 30,000 to 1,00,000 price bracket. While the iconic PRX, celebrating its fifth anniversary since its modern reinvention, has heavily captured the imagination of collectors, Hamza notes that this success is built upon 15 years of foundational hard work. He said that “The brand has truly paid its dues in the past fifteen years. In terms of network setup, infrastructure, the strategy as well as the footprint that they set up in India.” Supported by the post-COVID economic boom, robust retail infrastructure expansion in metro malls, and the rapid growth of India's upper-middle-income households, according to Hamza Tissot's rise also mirrors the broader acceleration of consumption across the country. However, while the PRX may not have been the sole reason behind Tissot’s growth in Hamza’s opinion,  he did admit that, “The PRX is definitely one of my favourites. I remember when it came out, I saw it and just fell in love with it.”

Discerning Collectors And The Grand Seiko Success

Moving from Switzerland to Japan, the discussion highlighted the staggering success of Grand Seiko's standalone boutique in Mumbai. Far exceeding initial projections, the brand's performance reflects an increasingly discerning Indian watch community that deeply understands advanced movements, Zaratsu polishing, and historical provenance. With average selling prices significantly higher than anticipated and even fulfilling exclusive requests for high-end Credor timepieces, the market has proven its readiness for the absolute pinnacle of Japanese watchmaking craftsmanship.  “To be able to operate a successful Grand Seiko standalone store in one of the best malls in the country is a massive testament to the brand and the heights to which they have evolved.”

The House Of Cavalli And Fashion Watch Evolution

Bridging fashion and horology, Hamza shared the journey behind House of Cavalli, a proprietary concept that brings together Roberto Cavalli by Franck Muller, Just Cavalli, and Cavalli Class under one immersive retail roof. When asked about the ways in which the name Franck Muller helps in terms of how people perceive the watches, Hamza responded with: “It helps in a big way. If I had to define the brand, then it's a blend of Italian fashion craftsmanship with Swiss precision.” This brand has scaled rapidly since its launch in Noida, expanding into a growing network of stores nationwide that bridges accessible luxury with strong lifestyle appeal. Hamza commented on the brands success saying, “We launched in Noida in 2022. We thought, let's take this as a test and see how it does. And like they say, the rest is history.”

Navigating Gen Z And The Power Of Experience

Addressing the modern consumer base, Patel offered a nuanced perspective on Gen Z, noting two distinct segments driving India's consumption story: highly researched individualists seeking quiet luxury alongside a newer, flashier demographic embracing statement pieces. According to Hamza, “They're truly leading the consumption story and they will continue doing that for at least the foreseeable long-term future.” While social media serves as a baseline tool for discoverability, Hamza stressed that true consumer decisions are ultimately shaped by in-store experiences and authentic engagement. “What really is driving and influencing consumer behaviour is experience. That is something that I continue to see.” Hamza said.

As the conversation drew to a close, Hamza reflected on what defines a strong entrepreneur and team leader, pointing back to a core philosophy of empathy and agility. By adapting his leadership style to individual needs and cultivating a remarkably low staff attrition rate, with team members ranking globally in brand academies, Hamza Patel and the AP Group are proving that the future of Indian retail belongs to those who value connection just as much as commerce.
