As a follower of independent watchmaking, I am continually amazed by the historic timepieces that redefine our understanding of horological evolution. This upcoming November, a truly extraordinary event is set to take place at The Geneva Watch Auction: XXIV at the Hotel President in Geneva. The watch industry relies heavily on auctions, not just as a venue for transactions, but as a vital barometer for measuring horological importance, historical rarity, and brand prestige. In the secondary market, a major auction can instantly transform an overlooked masterpiece into an international icon. This upcoming November, the spotlight falls squarely on Geneva as a highly anticipated event prepares to showcase a timepiece that represents the absolute foundation of modern independent watchmaking.

A Horological Milestone Comes to Light

The highlight of this auction is the arrival of one of the earliest and most historically important F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance wristwatches ever to appear at auction.

Bearing the serial number 022/99R, this timepiece is completely fresh to the market, offered for the very first time by its original owner, who has preserved it in a private collection for 27 years. Acquired in person in 1999, a full year before the model's official commercial launch, this piece represents the exact moment François-Paul Journe's audacious dual-balance complication became a reality for the public.

The Genesis of Commercial Resonance

To truly appreciate why this specific watch has caught my attention, one must understand the precise chronology of early F.P. Journe timepieces. The first 20 Chronomètre à Résonance watches, numbered 001 to 020/00R, were reserved strictly for the original supporters of the Tourbillon Souverain "Souscription" whose deposits funded the young manufacture. Meanwhile, serial number 021 was kept by Journe himself as a personal presentation watch for clients and retailers.

This leaves serial number 022 as the earliest commercially numbered Chronomètre à Résonance in existence. Fascinatingly, the original owner was free to choose any serial number and selected 022 simply because it matched the day of his birth. The suffix "/99R" engraved on the caseback signifies that the case itself was ordered in 1999, further solidifying its status as a foundational pre-production example.

Harnessing a Phenomenon on the Wrist

I find the mechanics of this watch to be nothing short of legendary. Officially launched in 2000, the Chronomètre à Résonance stands as the world's first wristwatch to successfully harness the phenomenon of resonance. François-Paul Journe drew inspiration from the 18th-century observations of horologist Antide Janvier and the later explorations of Abraham-Louis Breguet, adapting the principle for a wearable timepiece.

By placing two balance wheels in close proximity within the movement, the subtle vibrations generated by each wheel cause them to influence one another. Eventually, they settle into the exact same rate of oscillation, which drastically improves the overall consistency of the watch's timekeeping. More than a quarter-century later, it remains one of the defining independent horological creations.

Rarity Beyond the Standard Collectibles

While standard Souscription and Pre-Souscription models have periodically appeared on the market, I note that this piece belongs to a far more exclusive tier: the Pre-Production series. Only an estimated ten Pre-Production examples are believed to exist, making them exceptionally rare.

This specific 38mm platinum watch displays highly coveted features typical of early, elusive F.P. Journe production. It features an exceptionally rare shiny pink gold dial accented by silver-toned subdials, a brass movement, and the shallow caseback engravings that collectors actively hunt for. Estimated at CHF 500,000–1,000,000, it stands as a monumental offering.

The upcoming public preview and subsequent live auction on 7–8 November 2026 present what I view as a genuine once-in-a-generation opportunity for serious collectors. This is not just an early luxury watch, it is the physical proof that an independent master's most daring horological idea could function flawlessly in the real world. Everything that established the modern mythology around the F.P. Journe brand traces its lineage directly back to this very piece. To learn more about the brand, click here
