After a grueling 40-hour travel, thanks to a 23-hour delay in London, landing in Big Apple or New York as you may know it was like stepping into a foreign planet: one that was fueled by caffeine, adrenaline and of course…a shared obsession with horology. No time for jet lag I set right out with a series of events before me. Spanning across a very intense action-packed week, New York Watch Week brought together over 200 brands, thousands of passionate collectors and a kaleidoscope of formats that ranged from intimate micro-salons to grand trade shows.

From the Intimacy of Indies.NYC to the Scale of Wind Up

My week kicked off fabulously with Indies NYC that was created by Jon Cruys and Marie Ansel. With hundreds of attendees filling up the space it was a collectors dream minus the media or corporate pressure. The tables placed around featured brilliant independent makers: from Uk’s Garrik to Felipe Pikullik, Sarpaneva, and Holthinrichs. Some of the tables I came across even showcased raw prototypes directly out of school. You could simply just walk up to a table and directly have a chat with the watchmakers.

On other hand the Wind-Up Watch fair was nothing short of an absolute animal. Giving space to over 160 brands on a single floor it felt like an energetic bustling marketplace where microbrands, indies and giants like Bulova and Fossil rubbed shoulders. With lines that stretched several blocks outside, immediate sales, and collectors buying in frenzy, it became clear to me just how vibrant the American consumer market is.

High Elegance and Haute Horlogerie

As for a more formal affair, WatchTime New York which was held at the majestic Gotham Hall, delivering heavy hitting brands such as Chopard, Armin Strom, MB&F, Moser, Urwerk, and even Swatch Group's Blancpain. The event could simply be summarised as pure appreciation, high end displays and of course some deep horological conversations.

Another event that stayed with me is the exceptional showcase hosted by Cellini Jewelers. Spanning across three days it featured high-end independent heavyweights like Lang & Heyne, Ferdinand Berthoud, Antoine Preziuso, L.Leroy, Artime, and David Candaux. When you get to sit across such giants of the industry you grow to understand the meaning of true artisanal watchmaking.

Community, Learning, and the Road Ahead

Beyond the world of exhibitions and Independent giants my week also revolved around the very heartbeat of horology: its community. As their official Indian Representative of Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH), the FHH Watch Summit hosted at NeueHouse Madison Square provided insightful panel discussions with industry leaders on the future and sustainability of the watch market. On the other hand, coming closer to home, the Red Bar Global Indies Night held a set of intimate brand networking dinners with collectors flying in from Miami, UK, Asia and beyond. The night was just proof that whether you wear a vintage piece or a microbrand, the global watch tribe is entirely built on equal footing, zero snobbery and pure shared passion.

All in all, if I had to tell you what this whirlwind of an expedition in New York has left me with, I would say that it was all about bucketloads of knowledge, unforgettable connections and massive inspiration for building community experiences back at home. America’s dynamic consumer landscape was proof of just how powerful a passionate watch culture can be. This experience however is just an exciting glimpse of what the future holds for the Indian Watch community. New York’s watch week might be over, but the horological journey never really stops. So, consider this not an ending, but rather a temporary pause before we wind it all up again.
